Copper and Magnesium: How the Two Minerals Power Cellular Energy

Cells burn glucose in three phases. Glycolysis happens outside the mitochondria and depends on magnesium at key steps. The Krebs cycle runs inside the mitochondria and needs magnesium too. The last phase, the electron transport chain, sits in the inner mitochondrial membrane, which the book describes as functionally dependent on copper. Cytochrome c oxidase, the copper enzyme at the end of that chain, is where oxygen gets used.
Then comes ATP synthase, a molecular rotor the book describes as spinning at around 9,000 RPM and producing roughly three ATP per turn. The book stresses that this final complex requires both magnesium and copper to be present.
What Mg-ATP means
Cells spend ATP in a magnesium-bound form called Mg-ATP. The book puts it plainly: without enough copper and magnesium, cells fail to make ATP properly and fail to bind it to magnesium. So a shortfall in either mineral hits energy twice.
When the mitochondria are short on either one, electrons do not move cleanly and oxygen is not fully used. The result, per the book, is more reactive oxygen species and more oxidative stress. Excess iron makes this worse. The book calls iron the trigger for the loss of magnesium, and without enough bioavailable copper, iron builds up inside mitochondria. The proposed numbers are roughly three times the older ones. The book also points out that magnesium is needed to absorb vitamin D, so low magnesium drags other nutrients down with it.
Why serum magnesium misleads
An adult body holds about 25g of magnesium. Half or more sits in bone, most of the rest in soft tissue, and less than 1% is in blood serum. Serum levels are held within a tight range regardless of what is going on in tissue.
That is the problem with the standard test. The book notes that serum magnesium has little correlation with total body magnesium or with levels in specific tissues. Other methods exist (red blood cell magnesium, ionized magnesium, urine, loading tests), and no single one is considered satisfactory. A normal serum result does not tell you your cells are full. The body also adapts. When magnesium intake is low, intestinal absorption can rise from its usual range to about 80%, and the kidneys hold on to most of what they filter.
Magnesium malate vs glycinate: timing in the protocol
